Distilled Water Myths
If
you have done your research on distilled water, you have probably
arrived here confused and broken, and unsure of whom to believe. Not that
you should put anymore trust in us, a company that SELLS water
distillers, but we will try to clear up some of the (mis)information
that is "out there."
First, we think it's important for you to know
that we did not choose to sell water distillers because of a high demand
for them. We chose to sell them because we personally use them, believe
in them, and believe it's important to share the products and
information with other health conscious consumers. I promise you, this
is not an industry you get into if you are looking to get rich! (That
would be the bottled water industry!)
We did a LOT of research on distilled water, and were probably as
confused as most people who don't know who to believe. But we had an
advantage. We had already grown familiar with Dr. Myron Wentz, founder
of Gull Laboratories, Usana Health Sciences and
Sanoviv Medical
Institute. A well respected scientist and leader in his field, Dr. Wentz
KNOWS what he is talking about when it comes to cellular health and
nutrition. We had learned that Dr. Wentz promoted drinking distilled
water, so much so that he provided water distillers AT COST to his
distributors in the past.
Perhaps you are wondering what in the world I am talking
about...you've never heard anything bad about distilled water, and this
is new to you. Perhaps you have been drinking distilled water for years
and you are now getting worried! But don't worry...here are some myths being perpetuated on the internet,
and the truths behind them:
MYTH: Distilled water is an active absorber
and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide,
making it acidic.
TRUTH: There is no scientific basis for this, and there is no
documentation available with this claim. If it WERE true, drinking
something that's acidic does not cause an acidic state in your body.
Since you should also be concerned with your intake of calcium and
magnesium, rest assured that these minerals, along with other alkaline
foods, help to alkalize the body
and bring balance.
MYTH: Cooking foods in distilled water pulls
the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value.
TRUTH: Cooking any foods lowers the nutrient value, especially when
cooking in water and draining the water. Steaming is preferred, as is
cooking food where the water will remain with the food (and for this you
should definitely use distilled). Distilled water is not particularly
more "leaching" than any other type of water.
MYTH: The most toxic commercial beverages
that people consume (i.e. cola beverages and other soft drinks) are made
from distilled water.
FACT: I just called Coca-Cola, where I was told that Coke is not made
from distilled water. (I didn't call the other manufacturers :o) The
water used in soft drinks is the last concern we should have, and NOT
the reason why soft drinks are bad for you. Check out the other
ingredients.
MYTH: Distilled water leaches minerals from
our bones and cells, and causes mineral deficiencies because it lacks
the minerals found in other types of water.
FACT: It is true that distilled water can leach inorganic minerals,
but since it is neutralized once ingested, this concept does not apply
to human health. Water has so
little minerals in it, one should not depend on it for dietary benefits.
We get minerals from food, not water. - Water the Ultimate Cure
by Steve Meyerowitz, p. 80. Additionally, you can throw in a few of
grains of rice per gallon of distilled water to create your own "mineral
water."
MYTH: Fasting using distilled water can be
dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium,
chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can
cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure.
FACT: First of all, magnesium is NOT a trace mineral! "Only when you
drink distilled water repeatedly on a fast can it have the potential to
leach minerals from the body, and then only when the process of genuine
starvation has commenced. This extreme circumstance affirms the
mineral-leaching theory, but it bears no relevance to normal human
nutrition." - Water the Ultimate Cure by Steve Meyerowitz, p. 81.
There are lots of other corroborating sites available, and one of my
favorites is
Dr. Weil.
We also have
books on
water for health that will help you learn more about water and its
impact on your health.
We have read lots of testimonies of negative side effects of drinking
distilled water. But the problem is, there are just as many, if not
more, testimonies
FOR distilled water. We have been drinking it exclusively in our home
for about a year, and my nails are not brittle and my hair is not
thinning! The truth is, drinking distilled water and consuming
nutritious foods and supplements will only produce a healthy body. If
people think they are having problems with distilled water, there is no
way to tell if they are simply not consuming enough nutrients or have
other problems, such as hormone imbalance. The fact that they blame the
distilled water does not mean scientifically that the distilled water is
causing their symptoms. The fact is that the most pure water possible in
your home comes from a home distiller.
