Teaching Addition Facts
Whether your child is homeschooled, in private school, or in
public school, you may have noticed him struggling with
memorizing addition facts. Your child is not alone! Even if your
child is not struggling, the Sensible Addition math kit is for
you, simply because it helps students learn the facts much
faster than without it. I'm sure there are lots of other things
your student could be doing with that extra available time!
How Does Sensible Addition Work?
I developed Sensible Addition during my first year of
homeschooling. It was not developed because my son struggled
with math, but because I am always searching for ways of getting
things done more efficiently. I tend to think "outside the box,"
and have not figured out why others are not teaching addition
facts this way. Thanks to my teaching degree from Georgia State
University, and the time spent with my children in various
learning environments, I have the insight to think of ways of
improving how we are teaching our children. It does not take a
classroom of 30 students, a doctorate degree, or even an
expensive tax-funded study to come up with a better way: it
takes common sense!
Sensible Addition works on the knowledge that children learn
in different ways. Some learn better by seeing ("visual
learner"), some learn better by hearing ("auditory learner"),
and some learn better by moving ("kinesthetic or hands-on
learner"). If a child is an auditory learner, flash cards are
meaningless, especially if the development of the concept has
not been done properly. Since most children have a dominant
learning style and a weaker learning style, using Sensible
Addition makes sense, because it
- utilizes all three learning styles at one time to help
your child learn HER way,
- utilizes your child's weaker learning style to help her
improve it,
- gets the memorization of addition facts completed, AND
- helps you utilize this same learning strategy with other
subjects.
Sensible Addition is NOT
- A complete math curriculum
- Used for teaching the concept of addition. The concept
must be taught before memorization of facts. Your Sensible
Addition kit will come with suggestions for teaching the
concept of addition, or to see how well your student learned
the concept at school.
- Going to do the work for you (or your child). The kit is
not complicated at all, and can be used in child-led
learning. But it still requires some work on the parts of
both parent and child.
- A colorful, exciting, or frivolous sort of
entertainment. It is black and white, and meant to be used
along with other supplies to teach addition.
