A couple of months ago, I sat in my counselor's office and asked him why I had such a fear of success. I have great ideas, but hardly act on them, and assumed that it was because I felt inherently that I did not deserve success or the monetary gain that might come from it.

Then it dawned on me. It was not the fear of success that held me back. It was the fear of FAILURE! This is a very popular fear, and for good reason. It takes very little to create this fear in a person who otherwise is very bright, articulate, and seemingly successful. Something as simple as a small failure in childhood exaggerated by a perfectionist parent can lead to a future fear of attempting goals. Likewise, demeaning parents or siblings can cause this fear in adulthood.
